Do you have a favourite SERIES on TV? Do you like to watch Netflix?

In this lesson, we’re going to learn to talk about and describe our favourite series!

1) “Serie” or “Series”?

“SERIES” ALWAYS has an “S” at the end, even when singular 😊

But are there alternatives to the word "series"?

Yes! You can say...

  • A “show” or “TV show”

  • A “soap-opera” or “telenovela” (This Spanish word is also used in English, used to describe a melodramatic drama with a plot that offers a lot of suspense, romantic twists, and sometimes humour )

  • A “drama” or “TV drama”

  • A hospital drama, a legal drama, a war drama, a historical drama, etc

  • A “comedy” or “sitcom” (means “situation comedy”)

2) “Watch” or “See”?

While it’s true that we WATCH tv and WATCH a series, we can also use the verb “see” when talking about our favourites:

“WATCH” is used either in the present continuous (to talk about a series you are at this moment watching) or in present simple to talk about something you do or don’t do. You can also use it in the past simple to talk about something you did or didn’t do.

Example:

  • I’m watching Homeland right now (at this moment)

  • I don’t watch series.(in general)

  • I watched that documentary about Stalin’s daughter last night.

“SEE” is used to talk about a particular episode or moment in time.

Example:

  • Did you see (or watch) Lupin on Netflix last night?

  • I saw (or watched) Toy Boy on the weekend.

INCORRECT:

  • I’m seeing a new series on Netflix.

  • I see Netflix everyday.
